Buying a piano

You’d think that buying a piano would be a really great experience. You get to try dozens of pianos ranging from used uprights to new 9 foot grands worth $150,000. You simply pick the one you want, and buy it. Unfortunately it’s not that simple. Most of the dealerships (at least where I live) are the exclusive dealers for several brands. That means if you want to compare a Yamaha to a Kawai, you can’t. No store sells them both. To make matters worse, the Kawai salesmen are prepped to criticize Yamaha and vice-verse….. A lot. I kept telling the salesmen “I don’t care what you think, stop telling me all other pianos suck. I’m a pianist, I’ll decide which one I prefer.” This worked for the most part, but they’d still jab occasionally. Also, while I’d play through my repertoire, some of the salesmen would just wait. Rather than wait for me to finish, ti discuss details, some of them would follow me around the shop. I found this a little annoying, and I’d tell them “Don’t mind me, I’m going to play all your pianos, and then when I know which one I like, we talk talk numbers.” The good salesmen left me alone. The bad ones would follow me around, and makes comments in between my playing.

Side note, I went to one dealership, and told them my approximate price range. They showed me their pianos, but I didn’t like them. They then blamed it on my budget and said “You aren’t going to find anything that’s as good as you want for your budget. You should settle for a Kohler and Campbell and upgrade later.” He really acted as though I was being unreasonable.
That made me furious. I’d already found pianos that I liked, and that were in my budget (Brodmann, Pramberger and May Berlin). The dealer just didn’t stock those, and therefore criticized them.

After testing dozens of grands I ended up buying a Brodmann PE187 (6’2″) grand. It’s amazing. Finally, after spending two years without a piano, I now have one. Now I can practice again :)

Final Fantasy Piano Arrangements

Haven’t posted any piano stuff for a while as I’ve been pretty busy with both Uni and work.
Here’s my personal piano arrangement of the main themes of both Final Fantasy IX and X.
As usual, I’ll post the chords I’m playing.

A quick music lesson on chords

Knowing that basic chord structure seems a mystery to most, I thought I’d post about it, though just in basic form.

Often when I post music I’ve written, or a famous song that I’ve arranged I get people asking about chords.
Here are the basics

All examples will assume the key of C.
C Major is C E G in its first inversion (2nd inversion is E G B, and 3rd is G C E)
To make that chord minor, you just flatten the third, so C Eb G (where ‘Eb’ means E flat)
To make diminished, you flatten both the third and fifth, so C Eb Gb.
To make the chord augmented, you sharpen the fifth C E G#.
a C7 always implies a dominant 7th, C E G Bb
Cm7 would be the same, but with E being flattened.
a CMaj7 is C E G B
Another tricky one is Csus (C suspended) which usually means to include the perfect fourth, and sometimes the major second, so you’d play the C chord, including the F. Problem is, The F is next to both the third, and the fifth, so it can make it sound odd.

That’s really all there is to it. Those are the chords that most pieces require you to know.

Also, and less important, each of the notes of the scale have specific names
in order
1. tonic (often incorrectly called the root). Root is for the chord, tonic for the scale.
2. supertonic
3. mediant
4. subdominant
5. dominant
6. submediant
7. subtonic (or leading)

These are all relative to the key that you’re in. So in the key of C, C is the tonic, D is the supertonic and so on.
Some of the names should be obvious. The ‘super’ and ‘sub’ are one above and one below.
Tonic means first note in the scale.
Mediant is a third above the tonic (and middle note of the major triad in first inversion)
submediant is a third below the tonic (and middle note of the major triad in second inversion)
Dominant (creates the dominant chord)

School, piano and theft

Almost done with classes. Finals are next week, and starting Thursday I’ll be working full time till Sept.
So, what does all of this have to do with either piano or theft?
well, I got an email today from a guy in France that said the following

“Hi from France syxbit !
So first, I’d like to congratulate you for your video game interpretation on the piano (sorry for my poor english).
You really do a great job.
If I wrote you this message, it’s cause we got, on one of the more famous french videogame website (www.jeuxvideo.fr), someone, a forumer called freeezzz, that upload your videos on this website claiming it’s his own videos, on which we can see him play the piano… in a word, it’s an usurper.”

Pretty funny eh?
here’s the link to my video on that French website
http://www.jeuxvideo.tv/mgs-piano-video-37955.html
What’s funnier is that the video has been viewed and commented on FAR more on that website than on my own……. (86+ comments in only 3 days!)
I don’t keep up my French much, but here is what the guy posting my video says (roughly):

“Apparently nobody believes me, so it’ll be my last video. Anyway, I don’t care if you believe me or not cause I’m playing for me & not for you. I’ve done it to share my music with you …”

So, as I’ve said all along, piracy helps promote good music/films/games etc…. :) ……. Now to sue France……. ;)

main theme from "The Man in the Iron Mask"

The guy responsible for this was also one of the composers for “The Rock”
When I heard it, I new it was ripped from “The Rock” but that doesn’t stop this from still being incredible.
I love how after it changes key, it then goes from minor to major (listen closely to tell the difference!)

not to be confused with that fag who goes by the same name.
This is the main theme from the film starring Sean Connery
Besides the fact that the film is about the only escapee of Alcatraz being British SAS, I loved this film because of the incredible music.

In the film this is played on horns, but since I don’t play a brass instrument, I figured I’d just play it on the piano.
The “Gm9″ is a genius chord that resolves to a C major chord. Pay close attention to it!

Piano Recital

Due to frequent requests (well, maybe not that many) I’ve put my piano recital online for people to stream/download at will.
I have several links.
For the entire piano recital, which lasts ~40mins click here. The others are for the individual pieces I played.

This recital was recorded live the 30th April 2003.
I started learning the fourth piece on the list (Etude in D# minor op. 8 no. 12 by Alexander Scriabin) about 4 weeks before the recital, and only had it all memorized about a week before. (but of course, you wouldn’t be able to tell :) )
What seems odd about the date of my recital ?
Those of you who go to BYU will know that this is right around finals week. It was actually one day after the last day of finals. A stressful time, and one during which it was unfortunate I had to choose between studying and practicing.
Of course, I can still just make more copies of it on DVD (it was recorded digitally on a Sharp DV Camcorder) in case anyone’s interested, or has dialup!

Korsakov – Flight of the Bumble-bee

Rachmaninoff – Prelude in G minor

Scriabin – Etude in D# minor

Sousa – Stars and Stripes
